Special Education Initiative Focuses on Improving Literacy Skills
The Lower Pioneer Valley Educational Collaborative (LPVEC) is a group of seven school districts located in the Lower Pioneer Valley region of southwestern Massachusetts. In 2005, one of the Special Education Directors launched a campaign with two specific goals in mind: reduce out of district placements and increase student achievement for special education students. One of his first steps was to enter into a partnership with Lindamood-Bell. In the first year, student decoding and comprehension scores increased as out-of-district placements decreased.
|
This trend has continued as teachers and administrators have embraced and supported the Lindamood-Bell model and on-going professional development. Currently, the following districts from Lower Pioneer Valley are participating in the model: West Springfield, Agawam, Ludlow, and Southwick-Tolland Regional. The districts are also looking to expand the professional development and model into for regular ed. classrooms, to support their RtI framework.
