International Literacy Day
September 8th, 2009

"The Power of Literacy"

On International Literacy Day each year, UNESCO (United Nations Education, Scientific and Cultural Organization) reminds the international community of the status of literacy and adult learning globally.

Despite many varied efforts, literacy remains an elusive target.

Did you know?:
~ There are 75 million children who do not or cannot go to school.
~ There are nearly 800 million illiterate adults throughout the world.
~ 1 in 5 people in the world live in extreme poverty, that is almost 1 billion people!
(The UN defines extreme poverty as living on less than $1/day.)
